DFID is our largest donor, providing almost £40 million in the last 5 years – roughly 11% of all WaterAid UK income in that period.

We greatly value our partnership with DFID and on this page explore some of our most significant arrangements and case studies, made possible with UK Aid from the UK Government.

Programme Partnership Arrangement (PPA)

WaterAid held a Programme Partnership Arrangement (PPA) with DFID from 2002 until the funding mechanism was ended in December 2016.

The PPA was a strategic fund, which allowed organisations to make investment decisions specific to their areas of need and priorities.

WaterAid was able to use the PPA funding to develop new and improve existing internal systems and processes, as well as to invest in the work of our country programmes. These long-term investments allowed us to increase our organisational and programmatic efficiency, in turn enhancing our value for money.

PPA evaluation and case studies

As DFID’s PPA support to WaterAid and other civil society organisations came to an end in 2016, we conducted an external evaluation of the last five years of funding. The purpose of this was to understand and reflect on the impact DFID PPA funding has had, as well as support our learning and planning for future programming and decision making.

A synopsis of the evaluation report and WaterAid’s management response is available below, along with case studies produced as part of the evaluation from five of the countries we work in, which illustrate some of our country programme work.

UK Aid Match

UK Aid Match is one of DFID’s centrally managed funding streams and matches pound for pound the donations of the British public to an appeal. The aim is to give the British public a role in deciding how UK Aid budget is spent and has proved very popular with our supporters who have given generously to our appeals.

WaterAid has two active UK Aid Match grants. To Be A Girl in Nepal and Pakistan has a focus on empowering women and girls to manage their periods hygienically and with dignity. Deliver Life, our most recent grant, aims to improve water, sanitation and hygiene in communities and health facilities in Ethiopia, Malawi and Rwanda, with a focus upon mothers and newborns.

South Asia WASH results programme

In 2014, DFID launched the WASH Results Programme to support the achievement of the Millennium Development Goal target to halve the proportion of the global population without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation by 2015. The WASH Results Programme set out to reach 4.5 million people with WASH services by December 2015, with a further two years till early 2018 to ensure sustained use.

DFID awarded three large payment by results (PbR) contracts to three consortia to help achieve this objective. WaterAid is key member of the South Asia WASH results consortium working with Plan International UK, Unilever, WEDC, WSUP and Ipsos/Mori in Bangladesh and Pakistan. WaterAid and our partners have helped over half a million people to build and use improved hygienic latrines, practice improved handwashing with soap, and provided clean water to over 150,000 people.
